Mint

MINT, a Garden-Herb, or Pot-Herb, sufficiently known. The Law did not oblige the Jews to give the Tythe of these Sorts of Herbs; it only submitted to the Payment of Tythes what could be comprehended under the Name Income or Revenue, proventus; especially what was produced in the Countrey. But the Pharisees desiring to distinguish themselves, by a more scrupulous and literal Observation of the Law than others, gave the Tythes of Matth. xxiii. 23.Mint, Anise, and Cummin. Our Saviour does not discommend this Exactness, but he complains, that while they are so precise in these lesser Matters, they neglect the more essential Commandments of the Law.
