MATERNUS; several Authors, not very antient, and therefore of but little Credit, tell us that Maternus was the Name of the Son of the Widow of Nain, who was raised to Life by Jesus Christ, and who was sent (as they say) into Gaul, and thence into Germany. He died upon the Road, of which St. Peter being informed, he sent his Staff, which being applied to the dead Body, presently restored it to Life again. To him is ascribed the Foundation of the Churches of Treves, Leige, Tongres, Cologn, and Strasbourg. But the Monuments are wanting by which these Pretensions should be proved.
