IX. MARY, Daughter of Eleazar, of a very considerable Family, having retired to Jerusalem with her Husband and Son, as yet an Infant, at the Beginning of the Wars of the Jews with the Romans1, was there shut up when the Siege of that City was formed. Her Husband having been killed in a Salley, and the Zealots, who committed all Sorts of Outrages in the City with Impunity, having robbed her of all she had, she lived several Days without taking any Sustenance. But at last being overcome by Famine, and transported by Despair, she killed her Son, dressed him, and eat a Part of him. Quickly after the Zealots being drawn that Way by the Savour of this Food, they entered her House, and asked her where the Meat was that she had dressed. She shewed them some of the Limbs of her Child, inviting them to eat, and telling them in an insulting Manner, that they could not be more delicate than a Woman, or more tender than a Mother2.
