Lysanias

LYSANIAS, or Lysias, Tetrarch of Abylene, mentioned in Saint Luke iii. 1. This Lysanias was probably the Son or Grandson of another Lysanias known in History1, and put to Death by Mark Antony, who gave Part of his Kingdom to Cleopatra.

q Lysanias, the Son or Grandson of this first Lysanias, possessed Abylene, when Saint John Baptist began his Mission; for Saint Luke places him among the Princes who governed in Judæa, or the Country round about. But he either must have made no great Figure in the World, or his Government must have been of a very small Extent, since profane Historians make no Mention of him. Abilene was a small Province, situated between Libanus and Antilibanus, the Capital whereof was Abila. See ABILA.
