LORD, Dominus; in Greek, Kyrios; in Hebrew, Adoni, or Adonai; Elohim, or Jehovah; for the Greek and Latin Interpreters often put Dominus Lord for all these Names. The Name of Lord belongs to God in the Way of Eminency, and in this Sense ought never to be given to any Creature. Jesus Christ as God and Son of God, equal to the Father, is likewise oftentimes called Lord in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament.
II. This Name is sometimes given to Angels; whether they represent the Person of God, as in those Visions of the Old Testament, wherein the Patriarchs and Prophets speak to them in the same Terms as to God himself; or whether they are looked upon as Angels sent by God. For Example, Daniel says to the Angel, or as he calls him, to one who spoke to him under an human Form; O Dan. x. 16. 17.my Lord, by the Vision my Sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no Strength. For how can the Servant of this my Lord talk with this my Lord?
III. It is made Use of when we speak to Princes, Great Men and Persons, to whom we would shew Respect; and it is to be met with in this Sense at every Turn in Scripture. But generally the Word, my, is joined with it: My Lord; and tho’ sometimes the Words Adoni and Elohim are attributed to the Creature, Jehovah never is.
