LITURGY1. This Word is originally Greek, and is particularly made Use of in the Church, to signify the holy Sacrifice of the Altar , wherein the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ are consecrated. Heb. ix. 2.the Old Testament; for Example, speaking of the Ministry of Zachary, John the Baptist’s Father, and the Sacerdotal Ministry of Melchisedech. It is likewise made Use of to express the Service which Saint Paul did the Faithful by preaching the Gospel, and procuring Alms for them. In the Books of the Old Testament it signifies the Service 2 Cor. ix. 12. Phil. ii. 25, 30. 1 Chro. xxvi. 30. Numb. iv. 21. & passim.performed by the Priests and Levites in the Temple. It answers to the Hebrew, Aboda, which interpreted is Servitus, officium, ministerium.
