Joanna

JOANNA, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, was one of those women who followed our Saviour in his travels, and assisted him with their fortunes. S. Luke observes, that these women had been delivered by Jesus Christ from evil Spirits, which possessed them, or cured of diseases with which they had been afflicted. The wife of Chuza was either a widow, or followed Jesus Christ with the consent of her husband. It was a custom among the Jews, for men who dedicated themselves to preaching, to take some women of piety with them, who attended and served them. This was practised without any scandal. We Hieron. in Matt. xxvii. alii.know nothing particularly concerning the life of Joanna, the wife of Chuza.
