2 Kings xiii. 1, 2, 3, &c.I. JEHOAHAZ, the son of Jehu King of Israel, succeeded his father in the year of the World 3148, before Jesus Christ 852, before the Vulgar Æra 856. He reigned seventeen years to the year of the World 3165, before Jesus Christ 835, before the Vulgar Æra 839. He did evil in the sight of the Lord, and followed the ill example which had been given by Jeroboam the son of Nebat. Wherefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he gave them up during all this time to Hazael King of Syria, and Benhadad the son of Hazael. Jehoahaz, overwhelmed with so many misfortunes, prostrated himself before the Lord; and the Lord being moved with the Calamities of Israel, heard him, and sent a Saviour to him in the person of Joash his son, who re-established the affairs of Israel, and de-livered his people out of the hands of the Kings of Syria. Of all his soldiers Je-hoahaz had only fifty horsemen left, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot; for the King of Syria had defeated them, and made them like the dust of the threshing-floor. All this notwithstanding was not sufficient to prevail with the Israelites to forsake their evil ways, and their super-stitions. Joash the successor of Jehoahaz was more fortunate than his father, but did not depart from his impiety.
