Ishmael (II)

II. ISHMAEL, the son of Nethaniah, of the royal family of Judah, treacherously killed Gedaliah1, whom Nebuchadnezzar had established over the remains of the people, that continued in Judea, after the destruction of Jerusalem. See above Gedaliah. But John or Johanan the son of Carcah, having pursued Ishmael and his company, and overtaken him near the pool of Hebron, charged him, and obliged him to fly. He fled to Baalis king of the Ammonites. See Jerem. xli. 1, 2, &c.
