Antiq. l. 19. c. 4. Dio. l. 60. Antiq. l. 20. c. 1.V. HEROD, King of Chalcis, brother to Agrippa and Herodias, the son of Aristobulus, and grandson to Herod the Great. His first wife was Mariamne the daughter of Olympias, and afterwards Berenice his niece, the daughter of Agrippa the Great. The Emperor Claudius gave him the kingdom of Chalcis in the year of Jesus Christ 41. About the year 43, he obtained from the same Emperor authority to inspect the Temple, and the money consecrated to God, with a power of setting up or deposing the High-Priests. He made use of this power in deposing Simon Cantharus, and placing Joseph the son of Cani in his room. Herod died in the year of Jesus Christ 48. There is no mention made of this Prince in the sacred Writings. By his first wife he had a son, whose name was Aristobulus: and by his second, two sons, Berenicianus and Hircanus.
