Heptateuch

Reg. Sancti Bened. c. 22.HEPTATEUCH. This word signifies literally, the seven Works; and by this name are meant the seven first books of the Old Testament, which are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, and Judges. St. Benedict does not allow his Monks at their Conference before Compline, to read the Heptateuch, nor the books of Samuel and Kings. Legat unus collationes vel vitas Patrum, non autem Heptateucum, aut libros Regum, quia infirmis intellectibus non erit utile illà horà hanc scripturam audire.
