Heliopolis (II)

II. HELIOPOLIS, a city in Cœle-Syria, lying between Libanus and Antilibanus, Laodicea and Abila, otherwise called Balbeck, or Malbeck. There was a famous Temple here dedicated to the Sun, or God Balanius, magnificent remains whereof are still at this day visible. It is my opinion, that this is the city meant by the Prophet Amos in these words; I will cut off the inhabitants of the Idol’s camp. In the Hebrew, I will cut off the inhabitants of Bikath-aven, or of the Valley of Iniquity. He calls that city Bikath-aven, which the Heathen called Bikath-Baal, and which at present goes by the name of Baal-beck, the Valley of Baal.
