Hadad (II)

II. HADAD, King of Syria, reigned at 2 Sam. iii. 4.Damascus when David attacked Hadadezer another King of Syria. Nicholas Nicol. Damas. apud Joseph. Antiq. l. 7. c. 6.of Damascus relates, that Hadad upon intelligence that David made war with his ally, carried succours to Hadadezer as far as the Euphrates, where David was at that time, by whom both Hadad and Hadadezer were defeated. The Scripture likewise tells 2 Sam. viii. 5.us, that the King of Damascus going with a good body of troops to the assistance of Hadadezer King of Zobah, was killed by David, together with two and twenty thousand of his men: but it does not mention the name of this King of Damascus. This we learn from Nicholas of Damascus, who adds, that his successors the Kings of this City took the name of Hadad; and that one of his descendants being desirous to blot out the ignominy which this defeat had brought upon his ancestors, attacked the King of Samaria, and reduced his whole Country to a desolate condition. This was Benhadad who made war against Ahab, as we have seen in the article AHAB.
