TO GRIEVE, afflict, use ill. Grieve not the stranger. David would not grieve Exod. xxii. 21. 2 Sam. xiii. 21.the spirit of his son Amnon1. And St. Paul tells the Corinthians, that he rejoices, not to see them sad, but to see them 2 Cor. vii. 8, 9.sorrowing to repentance: Sed quia contristati estis ad pœnitentiam; that is to say, that their sorrow produces fruits meet for repentance, and a great abhorrence of evil. Eph. iv. 3.Grieve not the Spirit of God. This is the same very near with what he says to the Thessalonians, Quench not the Holy Spirit. Neither do nor say any thing which may afflict the Holy Spirit that is in you, or in your brethren. Commit no actions which may diminish the effects of the Grace of God’s Holy Spirit in you, that may deprive you of his inward Grace, or outward Gifts; or that may stop or suspend the effects of it in yourselves, or in your brethren. The old Hebrew Gospel, made use of by the Nazarens, ranked the Grieving of our brother’s spirit amongst the highest crimes. Hieronym. in Ezech. xviii. 7.

Translators’ note. This passage is an addition to the original Hebrew, and translated from the Greek of the Septuagint; Καὶ ἐκ ἐλύπησε τὸ πνεῦμα Ἀμνὼν τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ, &c. It is not however to be found in all the Greek copies; the Complutensian, as M. Bos observes, being without it. ↩
