GRATUS (Valerius) Governour of Judæa from the year of Jesus Christ 15 or 16, to 26 or 27. He succeeded Annius Rufus, and was himself succeeded by Pontius Pilate. What is in particular remarkable of Antiq. l. 18. c. 3.him, is, that he frequently changed the High-Priests. He deposed Ananus to make way for Ishmael, the son of Fabi; and shortly after, deprived Ishmael of the High -Priesthood, and invested Eleazar with it, the son of Ananus. At the year’s end he transferred it to Simon the son of Camith; and in a year after gave it to Caiphas, the son-in-law of Ananus.
