Antiq. l. 9. c. 10.I. GEBAL. This word is to be met with only in Psalm lxxxiii. 7. Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek. But the Chaldee and the Samaritan Version, instead of Mount Seir, sometimes put Mount Gebla. Josephus likewise speaks of the Gebilites to the south of Palestine; and Stephens, the Geographer, of the Gebalene in Arabia, which is the same as the country of Amalek. Lastly, Eusebius and St. Jerom in their books concerning the Hebrew places, make frequent mention of the Gebalene, or Gabalene, which is in Idumæa, and the capital Euseb. & Hieron. in Idumæa & Seir, & Alud & Mabser, & Jether.of it Petra. All these marks shew visibly, that the country called Gebal, or Gabalene, lies southward of the tribe of Judah, and in south Idumæa. This word Gebal signifies a Mountain; and the denomination of Gabalene is not ancient, since it appears only in the lxxxiiid Psalm, which in our opinion was written in the time of Jehoshaphat King of Judah.
