GAAL, the Son of Ebed, having entred Schechem in order to assist the inhabitants of that city against Abimelech, the Son of Gideon, the people began to resume new courage, to make excursions beyond their walls, and ravage the fields and vine-yards, and amidst their entertainments and rejoicings cursed In the year of the World 2771, before J. C. 1229 before the Vulgar Æra 1233. Judg. ix. 26, & seq.Abimelech. Gaal distinguished himself among the rest, and cried, Who is Abimelech, and who is Schechem, that we should serve him? Would to God this people were under my hand, then would I remove Abimelech. Zebul, Governor of the city for Abimelech, having heard these discourses, informed Abimelech of them, who thereupon came against him with an army. Gaal went out of the city, and at first stood near the gates, not being very sure, whether it were Abimelech’s army or not, that appeared at a distance. But Abimelech coming nearer Gaal, advanced to engage him; but was defeated, and compelled to fly. He attempted to get into Schechem, but Zebul prevented him; and the Scripture does not tell us what afterwards became of him.
