Fountain of Elisha

FOUNTAIN of Elisha. This is that, the waters whereof were sweetned by Elisha. It runs along the plain of Jericho, and Josph. de Bello, l. 5. c. 4.falls into the river Jordan.

Hagar’s FOUNTAIN. This the Angel discovered to her, while she was wandering in the Desart, to the south of Beersheba. Gen. xxi. 19.

Dragon-FOUNTAIN, or Well. It lay in all probability eastward of Jerusalem. Nehem. ii. 13. See DRAGON.

Samson’s FOUNTAIN, which issued out of a rock, called the Grinders, in Hebrew Machtes, has subsisted a long time, and is perhaps still in being at present in the Tribe of Dan, near a place called Lechi, that is to say, the Jaw-bone. Antonin the Martyr and Vide Bochart. de animal. sacr. parte 1.l.2.c.15.Glycas place this Fountain in the suburbs of Eleutheropolis. Some Rabbins describe it to be near the brook Kedron, and others near Tiberias. St. Jerom seems to put Morasthi between Succoth and Samson’s Fountain, which agrees pretty well with those who place it near Eleutheropolis.
