FLAVIUS SYLVA, Bassus’s successor in the government of Judæa: he took the castle of Massada, where the rebels defended themselves after the taking of Jerusalem, and blocked up Eleazar so close, who was one of the heads of the Assassins, that he obliged him to kill himself, after having first dispatched all the Garrison. This happened in the year of Jesus Christ 72. Sylva was the last Governour of Judæa.
