Bibliotheca Sacra · The Fifth and Last Part

Article LIX. Catholick Comments upon the three Epistles of St. John.

ST. Austin wrote only upon the first Epistle of St. John, and has no less excelled in it than in his Treatise upon this Apostle’s Gospel. He is more concise, but has gone as much to the bottom of things. His Comment is in the second Part of the third Tome, in the new Edition.

That of John of Louvain, or Hessels, was printed at Doway, in 1599, in 8vo. See above.

That of John Lorin, is with what he wrote upon the seven Canonical Epistles.

Folengi’s is with what he composed upon the Epistle of St. James, and the two of St. Peter. See above.

Bartholomæus Petri began at the fifth Chapter of the first Epistle, where Estius had left off, and continued his Work upon the two other Epistles. We have already spoken of him upon the Acts: We shall add here, that he was of Brabant, born in the Diocess of Mechlin, was Professor at Doway; and died in 1630.
