Article LII. Treatises and Dissertations upon the Epistle to the Hebrews.

FRederick Spanheim, who is the true Author, has written a large Work upon the Author of the Epistle to the Hebrews, and upon other preliminary Questions, which are proposed concerning this Epistle. His Exercitations relating to the Author of it, are in the Great Criticks, p.737. tom. 10. where he proves, that it can be only St. Paul’s. See too our Preface.

The dissertation of Ambrosius Catharinus, is to be found ibid. p. 797. where he proves the same thing.

The Confutation of a Dissertation upon the 9th Chapter by Esric Guisard, is ibid. p. 801. He was a Calvinist of Geneva. He attacks, particularly, what Codurque wrote upon this Chapter; and concerning his Conversion.

Upon several other Subjects.

James Gousset has several Disputations upon this Epistle; printed at Amsterdam, 1712, in fol. He was of Blois, a Calvinist, and Professor at Groninguen. He died in 1717.

John Godfrey Lave, his Disputatio Exegetica upon chap. 13. from ver. 8. to 15; printed at Lipsick, 1705, in 4to. He was a German Lutheran.

John George Neuman has another Disputation, upon the High-Priest of the New Testament, chap. 7. ver. 26, 27. at Wittemburg, 1699, in 4to. See upon St. Matthew.

John Schmid, his Exegesis upon ver. 4. of chap. 13. was printed at Lipsick, 1624, in 4to. He was a German Lutheran, and Professor at Strasburg. He died in 1658.

Michael Siricius upon the Tears of Jesus Christ; at Giessen, 1666, in 4to. and with an Appendix, 1674, in 4to. See upon the first to the Corinthians.

John James Lavator wrote a Disputation upon the Promises in Jesus Christ made to the Patriarchs of the old Law, and the Faithful of the new Law, in order to clear the 10th, 11th, and 12th Chapters; printed at Zurich, 1714, 1715, in two Volumes in 4to.

He was of Zurich, born in 1657. taught Divinity in 1684, till 1710. See the Catalogue of his other Works in the Bibliotheca Philologica, tom. 2. p. 568.

James Stalkopff wrote a sacred Observation upon the Oracle of St. Paul to the Hebrews, chap. 11. ver. 3. printed in the Bibliotheca Philologica, tom. 4. p. 20, 33.

There was a Dissertation printed at Rome, in 1719, upon the Divinity of the Messiah; intended as an Explanation of the second and third Verses of the first Chapter. The Author, to give a general Idea of the Messiah, undertakes the consideration of the four principal Characters belonging to him, which he finds happily represented in this Passage of the Epistle.

Upon Melchizedeck, and the High-Priest.

Christopher Schlegel, his Dissertation upon Melchizedeck, of whom there is mention made in this Epistle, is in the Great Criticks, p. 829. This we have already taken notice of upon Genesis; as well as of Van. Rein’s Work.

Frederic. Koerburg, de Melchizedeck; his Philological and Theological Discourse upon this Subject, is in the first Tome of the Philological Dissertations; and was printed at Zwickau, in 1673. He was a German Lutheran. In the Dissertations upon Genesis; I have named some other Authors, who likewise have written concerning Melchizedeck.

John Wilkins, functio Pontificis Maximi, ad Hebr. 9. 7. This is in the second Tome of the same Dissertations. He too was a German Lutheran.

Salom. Deylingii, ad Hebr. 3. 1, 2. Considerate Apostolum & Pontificem confessionis nostræ, Jesum. Et in Hebr. 7. 22. Melioris testamenti Sponsor factus, &c.

Idem in Hebr. 4. 16. de ingressu Ponticis in Templum. Et in Hebr. 13. 4. de nuptiarum dignitate, tom. 3. chap. 47. Obser. Sacr.

Immanuel. Weber ad Hebr. 13. 16. Beneficentiæ, & oblivionis, nolite oblivisci, &c. This should be in the second Tome of the Philological Dissertations with his other Works; F. le Long, however, says nothing of it. We have spoken of him upon the first Epistle to Timothy.

We may add John Andrew Dantz, who likewise has written upon ver. 7. of chap. 9. upon the Subject of the High- Priest’s annual Function in the Sanctuary; printed at Jena, 1683, in 4to. See upon St. Matthew.
