Article XLI. Catholick and Protestant Commentators upon the two Epistles to the Thessalonians.

Gabriel Vasquez, and they who have written upon all St. Paul’s Epistles.

Of the Protestants, Francis Gomar, and the others above-mentioned.

Among those who have written particularly upon these two Epistles, we shall place Jodoc. Willich, a German of Prussia, a Lutheran, and Physician at Frankfort, who died in 1552. His Comment was printed at Strasburg, in 1545, in 8vo.

John Croce, or Crocius, a German, above -mentioned, made a Comment upon these Epistles, and some others, in two Volumes in fol. printed at Marpurg, in 1663. He died in 1659. as we have already mentioned, upon the Epistle to the Ephesians.

William Bradshaw, an Englishman, put out an Explanation of these two Epistles, in English; printed at London, 1620, in 4to.

We must not omit the Notes of Jonah Schlichtingius, upon the 8th Verse of the 2d Chapter, against Grotius. They were printed first of all at Amsterdam, in 1643, in 8vo. and afterwards in the Great Criticks, of the last Edition, under the Name of John Simplicius; which made it believed that they were by Salmasius, who concealed himself under this Name. We need only read some Lines of these Notes, to be convinced that they were by one more conversant in Divinity than Salmasius; one who reasons with great art, and perspicuity, and method, but does not write so well in Latin, nor shew any philological Learning, in which Salmasius excell’d, and made Dissertation in the Bibliotheca Philologica, tom. 5. p. 800, 857. wherein he explains what we are to understand by the Son of Perdition.

Tobias Eckard, his Performance upon the Subscription of St. Paul’s Epistles, mentioned in the second Epistle, ch. 3. ver. 18. was printed at Wittemberg, 1687, in 4to. and in the second Tome of Philological Dissertations. We have spoken of him above. See his Title in the Index.

John Michael Lange wrote of the Genealogies and Fables of the Jews, upon chap. 1. ver. 1. of the first Epistle; in the second Tome of Philological Dissertations. We have spoken of him elsewhere.

Hippolitus Fronto, or rather Peter du Moulin, and Henry Morus, upon Antichrist. They are cited in the Synopsis.

We speak of the several Works of St. Hippolitus, Abbot Adson, Malvenda, and Grotius, in the Article relating to Antichrist; which we do not repeat in this Place.

We have a Dissertation upon the End of the World, in the second Tome of our Comment on St. Paul’s Epistles.

There is a Dissertation printed at the end of M. de Tillemont’s Life, which was made by him upon the State of the World after the Resurrection, p. 197.

We have likewise a Dissertation upon the Resurrection of the Dead, tom. 2. on St. Paul; and in the Collection of our Dissertations, tom. 1. p. 803.

See what is observed upon the same Subject, at the end of the Article concerning the Funerals of the Hebrews.
