SEE the Prefaces of Commentators upon this Epistle, as well general as particular, Catholick and Protestant, Ancient and Modern.
Upon the Name and Person of Cephas, reprov'd by St. Paul.
See F. Hardouin’s Dissertation; wherein he inquires, whether Cephas and St. Peter are the same Person. It is in the Collection of his select Works, p. 920; printed at Amsterdam, 1709, in fol. Here he pretends that Cephas is not the same with St. Peter; and, consequently, that it was not this Apostle, who was reproved by St. Paul. We have already spoken of him upon the Acts.
M. Boileau, formerly Canon of the Holy Chapel, wrote a theological Disquisition on the second Chapter, ver. 2. to the Galatians; wherein he examines the same Question. Herein he follows the Opinion opposite to F. Hardouin, and the most commonly received in the Church, ever since St. Austin supported it against St. Jerom. His writing was printed at Paris, in 1713, in 16°. in Latin.
We treat of it likewise in our Dissertation prefix’d to our Comment upon this Epistle; and in the Collection of our Dissertations, tom. 3. p. 519. Deyling. in his Sacred Observations, tom. 2. chap. 45.
Upon St. Peter’s Dissimulation, see St. Jerom, and St. Austin, in the Epistles which they have written to each other upon this occasion. They are in the new Edition of St. Austin, Ep. 20. 40. 71, 72, 75. 80, 82. It may be proper to read them. Herein we see how the former changed his Opinion, and submitted to the pressing Reasons of the latter, tho much younger.
Cæsar d’Arcons, a Catholick Advocate in the Vivarez, made three Dissertations upon the Scripture: the first whereof is upon St. Paul’s Dispute with St. Peter; printed in French at Brussels, 1680, in 4to. He died in 1681.
John Wagner, a Lutheran of Germany, and Minister-General of Brunswick, wrote upon the same Subject; at Tubingen, 1668, in 4to.
John Andrew Quenstadt wrote upon the Reprehension of St. Peter by St. Paul; printed at Wittemberg, 1687, in 4to. See upon St. John.
John George Richterus, a Lutheran, and Minister-General of Reichembach, has treated on the same Subject; printed at Lipsick, 1408, in 4to.
Upon the Marks, and Anathema of St.
Paul.
Deyling. in Galat. 6. ver. 17. Stigmata Domini J.C. corpore meo porto; in his Sacred Observations, tom. 3. chap. 43.
Christian Bosen has written upon St. Paul’s Anathema, against those who preach any other Gospel than that of Jesus Christ; at Lipsick, 1672, in 4to. and in the second Tome of Philological Dissertations. He died in 1671.
Upon several other Subjects.
Michael Cobabus, mentioned by us upon the Epistle to the Romans, made a Dissertation upon the third Chapter; printed at Rostock, 1671, in 4to. It is an Answer to Reisentampff, says Lipenius.
John Frederick Mayer wrote several Dissertations upon this whole Epistle; printed at Grypswald, in 1709, in 4to. See above upon the Acts.
Theodore Hasæus has an Exercitation upon the Baptiz’d putting on Jesus Christ, mentioned in chap. 3. ver. 27. This is in the Bibliotheca Philologica, tom. 4. p. 1007, 1047. in 35 Articles. Frederick Christopher Neubour made a juridical and critical Exercitation upon chap. 4. ver. 1, 2. in the same Collection, tom. 5. p. 40, 56. wherein he reconciles the seeming Contradiction of an Infant-Heir, who does not differ from a Servant, tho he be Master of all the Wealth of his Family.
