Article LXXV. Catholick and Protestant Commentators on the Maccabees.

Rabanus Maurus, in his Writings on the Maccabees, keeps to the historical and allegorical Meaning; as he tells the Emperor Lewis le Debonnaire, to whom he dedicated his Work.

Nicolaus Serrarius wrote upon the same Books. We find it with his other Comments, see upon Tobit; and his Title in the Index.

Victorinus Strigelius, his Scholia were printed at Lipsick, in 1571. the second Edition, in four Volumes in 8vo.

Fullonus in Maccabæos; Leodii, 1660, 1664, in three Volumes in fol. His large Comments are upon the first Book only. He was himself of Liege, a Jesuit, and died in 1658. His Name was John Erard Fullon.

Josephus Stephanus explains only the four first Chapters of the first Book, in one Volume in 4to. at Valentia, 1616. under this Title, De Bello sacro Religionis causâ suscepto. He was of Valentia in Spain; was made Bishop of Origuela in 1594. and died in 1604. and not in 1594, as M. Du Pin says.

Joan. Petri Verborst, Commentarius in Macchabæorum, lib. 1. Treviris, 1700, in fol. This is a very inconsiderable Work. The Title of his Comment is, Sacræ Militiæ Typus & Historia. There are Prolegomena in the beginning of it, which may be of some use. He was Bishop of Arba in Dalmatia, and flourished in the beginning of the 18th Century.

The Notes of Drusius, Badwel, and Albert Gentilis, are in the Great Criticks, tom. 5. of the first Edition, at the end; Those of the two latter were printed separately at Franekar, 1600, in 4to.

Gentilis was an Italian of the March of Ancona, a Calvinist, a Lawyer, and Royal Professor at Oxford. He died in 1608. and the 58th Year of his Age. In his Disputation he handles his Matter like a Lawyer, and pretends to destroy the Authority of these Books, because, in his opinion, there are Things in them contrary to the Law of Nature and Nations; and this he says he had done before, as to the Books of Tobit, and Esther.

Himmelius wrote an Analysis of these very Books, which is with those composed by him on the apocryphal Books.
