Article LV. Treatises and Dissertations upon the Canticles.

SEE Sanctius’s Preface to this Book; and ours, with our Dissertation on the Marriages of the Hebrews. See likewise hereafter the particular Article wherein we shall treat of the Marriages of the Hebrews. In our Preface to this Book we examine who is the Author of it, at what Time, and upon what Occasion it was written. We likewise explain in it the seven Marriage-Days and Nights.

Deylingii, in Cantic. 3. 11. de Rege Salomone nuptiarum die coronatio, Observ. lib. 3. c. 16.

Hincmarus, Archbishop of Rheims, wrote a Book intitled, Ferculum Salomonis, Cantic. 3. 9. Solomon’s Chariot, or Litter; but this Book had properly no relation to its Title, for it treated of Grace and Predestination, of the Sacrament of some Places in the Book of Wisdom. The Fragments of his Explanation are in the 7th Tome of his Works.

Rabanus Maurus, in his Epistle to Othgarius Archbishop of Mentz, tells him that he was determined to write upon the Book of Wisdom, because he had observed that none of the ancient Fathers had explain’d it; and that the Work of Bellator the Priest, mentioned by Cassiodorus in his divine Lessons, chap. 1, 5, 8. who composed eight Books upon this, had not been handed down so low as to his Time.

There is a Comment on this Book said to be St. Bonaventure’s. It was printed at Venice, in 1575, in 8vo. and in the first Tome of his Works.

Among the Moderns we have Holkot, Jansenius of Ypres, Lorin, Maldonat, Cornelius à Lapide, Osorius, Luke of Bruges, and Nannius; printed at Basil, 1521, in 4to.

Robert Holkot’s Lectures were printed at Basil, 1586, in 4to. the last Edition.

The Notes of Jansenius, Bishop of Ghent, at Antwerp, 1689, in 4to. and at Lyons, 1580, in fol.

The Analecta of Jansenius of Ypres, with what he put out upon Proverbs. See above.

The Comment of Lorinus, at Mentz, 1608. in 4to. at Cologn, 1624. in fol.

Osorius the Elder made a Paraphrase, which was printed at Bologna in 1577, in 4to. and at Cologn in 1584, in 8vo. and among his other Works. See above.

Peter Nannius made Scholia, and a Comment; printed at Basil, in 1551, in 4to. Colomesius says that no one has written better upon this Book; and Fabricius, in his Bibliotheca Græca, tom. 2. wonders that his Works were not inserted in the Great Criticks. He was an Hollander of Halcmar, and a Canon.

Nicholas Selneccer put out Notes, which were printed at Lipsick, in 1568, in 8vo. with the Greek Text. He was a Lutheran, Professor at Lipsick, where he died in 1592, at 60 Years of age. His Notes upon this Book, like all the rest compos’d by him, are in no great request, he being rather a controversial than a critical Writer, says Du Pin, in tome 1. of his Bibliotheque des Heretiques.

Lawrence du Pont, or de Aponte, has inserted Homilies, Scholastick Digressions, and a Paraphrase in his Comment. It was printed at Paris, in 1629, in fol. He was of Naples, became a Canon Regular, and died in 1639. and the 64 Year of his age.

M. Bossuet, Bishop of Meaux, and M. de Bellegarde have also written on this Book. Add those who have written on the whole Bible.

Among the Protestants are Badwel, Grotius, &c. printed in the large Criticks. Badwel’s Scholia are in the fifth tom. of the great Criticks.

To these we may add, John Sartor, who wrote a Comment, which was printed at Basil, in 1558, in fol. under the name of Tosius. He was a Calvinist of Amsterdam, and died in 1568. Vir pacis amantissimus, says Crovæus.
