Article LIII. Catholick Commentators on the Canticles.

T. Gregory of Nyssa says, that Origen Sscure Places, may be of some use to those who apply themselves to the Study of the Scripture. His preliminary Dissertation is short, but curious. In it M. Ycard examines what relates to the Author of Ecclesiastes. Some rash Criticks, says he, upon very frivolous Grounds, have ventured to maintain that Solomon never writ this Book: Three or four Chaldee Words which we have met with, persuade these Gentlemen that the Author of Ecclesiastes lived long after Solomon. Our Author gives us next an Analysis of the whole Book, which he divides into three Parts: The first contains the four first Chapters wherein Solomon proves this important Truth, that every thing is Vanity: The second begins with the fifth Chapter, and ends at ver. 8. of the twelfth; where he instructs us to fear God, and keep his Commandments: Lastly, the third is an Abridgment of the whole Book. He was by nation an Englishman.

Among the Rabbins we may see Solomon Jarchi, Aben Ezra, and several others mentioned in F. le Long; and Lipenius’s Bibliotheca Theologica, tom. 1.
