Article VIII. Of Sacrifices.

THE High-Priests, Priests, and other Ministers, were appointed to offer Sacrifices; this was their principal Function, and most essential Duty. We shall treat of them particularly in this Article, as we speak of those who have written on this Subject.

Maimonides de Sacrificiis ex versione Ludovici de Compiegne de Veil, at London, 1683, in 4to. and in Crenius’s seventh Fasciculus. We have already spoken of the Author above. See his Name in the Index.

De Sacrificiis Hebræorum, by William Outram, in two Books; the first whereof treats of the Sacrifices of the Jews, and other Nations; the second of the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ; printed in Latin, at London, 1677, in 4to. and at Amsterdam, 1688, in 8vo. This Author was an Englishman, of the Church of England, and Prebendary of Westminster. Throughout his whole Work he attacks particularly Socinus and his Followers.

He afterwards specifies the different Sorts of Sacrifices, which the Jews were obliged to offer, according to their different Wants, or the Laws which were prescribed to them, and sets down all those who have treated of them.

Joan. Frischmuth, de Sacrificiis Patriarch. seu primorum hominum, at Jena, 1653, in 4to. He has treated likewise of the Scape-goat. This we find in the great Criticks. We have already spoken of this Author, and shall again speak of him.

Schola Sacrificiorum Patriarchalis, by Jonah Cloppenburg, at Leyden, 1637, in 16mo. We shall speak of this Author in another Place.

Henr. Pontani, de sale Sacrificiorum. Trajecti, 1703, in 4to.

De Sacrificiis Hebræorum, by John Saubert, at Jena, 1659, in 8vo. We have already said something of him.

Joan. Spencer, de Hirco emissario, de Legib. Hebr. Ritual. l. 3. Dissert. 8. We have mentioned the Edition of it above, in the Article of Laws.

Maimonides de vacca rufa, cum Comment. Andr. Christoph. Zelleri. Joan. Bened. Carpzovii, de vacca rufa, at Lipsick, 1669, in 4to. Another dogmatical Dissertation on the same Subject, ibid. 1678, in 4to. We have spoken already of this Author.

Rituale Ecclesiasticum, by Gaspar Calverius, printed at Jena, 1705, in 4to. It is divided into two Parts: The first treats of the Original and Causes of the several Rites observed in the Evangelick Churches; of the good and bad Use which is made of them: The second respects Places, Times, sacred Persons, and every thing relating to Ecclesiastical Antiquity. See his Title in the Index.

De lustratione Judæorum, by Theodore Dassovius. This Treatise was printed at Wittemberg, in 1692. See likewise his Title in the Index.

De uno Altaris Sacrificio, by Dodwel, in English, and printed at London, 1682, in 8vo. The Latin Title, as we meet with it in the King’s Library, runs in the following manner; Ex Antiquis Autoribus in eorum adversus Schismata controversiis, cum necessariis Relationibus ad quosdam Tractatus postremos Ricardi Baxter. We shall say something of this English Protestant in another Place.

Concerning the Sacrifices of the Hebrews, see besides, other Authors cited by Fabricius in his Bibliotheca Antiquaria, ch. x. numb. 1, 2, 3. Here he refers us for our better Information to what Edward Bernard says of them, in his Notes upon the third Book of Josephus’s Antiquities, the ixth, and following Chapters; where he laments the loss which the World has sustained by that of this Jewish Historian’s Work concerning the Laws of the Hebrews, p. 211.

Lipenius, in his Bibliotheca Theologica, mentions also other Authors who have treated the same Matter.

Schola Sacrificiorum Patriarcharum Sacra, by Wolfang Franzius; in 22 Disputations, printed in 1614, 1625, and 1654. See upon Leviticus, Article XII.

Clypeus Fortium, by Rabbi Abraham Rophé, that is to say, a Jewish Physician. Here he speaks of the Sanctuary, Incenses, Sacrifices, &c. printed at Mantua, in 1612.
