IT is very common when we speak of the Messiah, to treat at the same time of Antichrist; because the latter is to endeavour to destroy that holy Religion which the Messiah has established, and sealed with his Blood. We have nevertheless thought it proper to distinguish one from the other in a separate Article.
S. Hyppoliti Martyr. de Antichrist. ejusdem seu aliûs, de Consummatione Mundi, & Antichristo. There is no question made at present but that this last Treatise is spurious. We shall say something of this holy Martyr in the Article of general Catholick Commentators, Part IV.
Malvenda, de Antichristo, Romæ, 1604. in fol. At Valentia 1621, in fol. and with his other Works on Scripture. This contains thirteen Books, and is very much esteemed. M. Dupin has made an Abstract of it in his Bibliotheque Ecclesiastique of the seventeenth Century, Tome 1. p. 282. We shall speak of this celebrated Author in several Places. See in particular upon the Revelations.
Adsonis Dervens. Abbatis, de Antichristo, inter opera divi Augustini. This Treatise is in the Appendix to the sixth Tome of the new Edition of St. Austin. The Prologus and Epilogus, which were omitted are in the Additions to Tome II. after the general Tables.
Some are of opinion that Adson was Abbot of Luxeu in Franche-Compté, and of Montier-ender in Champaigne, and perhaps of Saint Mammert of Toul. The Treatise here mentioned has been restored to him; for it had been falsly attributed to St. Austin and Alcuinus.
Benedicti Pererii Diputationes xxiii. printed at the end of his Comment on the Revelations. In these he disputes against Annius of Viterbo, and several others, who were of opinion that Mahomet was Antichrist, and spoken of in the sacred Writings and the Fathers. We shall say something of him upon Genesis.
See our Dissertation on Antichrist, in our Comment on St. Paul’s Epistles.
We might add those here who have written of the false Messiahs; but of these you may see the Catalogue in Fabricius’s Bibliographia, p. 246, and in Lipenius’s Bibliotheca Theologica, tom. 2. p. 278.
