HERE again is another Subject for the learned Criticks; they have taken pains to find out the different sorts of Diseases mentioned in the Scripture, their Causes, Nature and Species; which is of no small use in explaining well those Passages which seem obscure.
Francisci Vallesii, de sacrâ Philosophiâ. Lugd. 1592, in 8vo. at Frankfort, 1667, in 8vo. He speaks here of the Diseases mentioned in the Scripture. This Francis de Valles was a Spaniard, born in Old Castile, and Physician to Philip II. King of Spain. He has written only of Physick, as may be seen in Nicholas Antonio, who has set down all his Works.
Guill. Ader, de morbis Evangelicis, printed at Toulouse, 1628, in 8vo. and in the Great Criticks of London, tom. 9. p. 3660. the first Edition. Fabricius has given us an Extract of it in the History of his Library, tom. 1. p. 291. and delivers his Judgment of it, ibid. p. 335. He undertook this Work to prove the Truth of our Saviour’s Miracles. He was a Catholick Physician, and lived in the Beginning of the seventeenth Century.
Thomæ Bartholini, de morbis Biblicis, apud Crenium in fasc. 5.
Ejusdem, de latere Christi aperto, de Cruce, & de Paralyticis nov. Testam. His Piece upon the Diseases mentioned in the Bible was printed separately at Frankfort upon the Mein, in 1672, and at Copenhagen, 1673, in 8vo. That only which he wrote concerning the Paralyticks in the Gospel is in Crenius, and had been before printed at Copenhagen, 1653, in 4to. at Basil, 1662, in 8vo. See the Dissertation upon St. Matthew, where there is mention of him, and of another Work.
Christiani Warlitz, de morbis Biblicis. Wittebergæ, 1714. in 8vo. To this we shall add his Treatise upon the different Diets, Drinks, and precious Stones mentioned in the Scripture. See the Literary News of Germany for 1705, p. 169. He was a German Lutheran, Doctor and Professor of Physick.
Conradi Tobreni Dissert. de morbis Biblicis & de Christo medico. Francofurt. ad Oderam, 1704.
Valentini Henrici Vogler, de rebus naturalib. & medicis, quarum in sacrâ Scripturâ sit mentio. Helmstad. 1682. 4to.
