Article XI. Of the Way of Interpreting Scripture.

Hieronymus ad Pammachium, De optimo genere interpretandi. It is the 53d, or 101st of his Epistles.

Lindanus de optimo genere Interpretandi. This Treatise contains three Books, and was printed at Cologn, 1558, in 8vo. He composed other Pieces upon Scripture, of which we shall take Opportunity to say something. He was of Dort, Bishop of Ghent, and died in 1558. John Isaac a Convert Jew, wrote another Treatise against him, with the same Title, and printed ibid. 1559, in 8vo.

Huetius de optimo genere Interpretandi, & de claris Interpretibus, l. 2. This Piece was printed at Paris 1661, in 4to. and at the Hague 1683, in 8vo, the third Edition. It is in great Esteem, and very useful on the score of the different Opinions given by him of different Interpretations published by learned Men, as well upon the Books of Scripture, as upon other sacred and profane Works.

Johannis Clerici, de optimo genere Interpretum Sacræ Scripturæ, in Tom. 1. Comment. in Genes.

M. Simon, in the 2d and 3d Books of his Critical History of the Old Testament, treats on the same Subject.

Charles le Cene’s Project of a new French Translation of the Bible, at Roterdam, 1696, in 8vo. There are many good Remarks in this Work; but the Impression is not correct. What is more to be lamented is, that we have only the first Part, and the second is still in Manuscript, according to the Literary News of 1703. for the Month of September, p. 356. The Author’s Design is to shew all the Faults that occur in the French Versions of the Bible, and particularly in that of Geneva. He was of Caen, and an Arminian. He died in 1703. Thus the Enemies of the Catholick Religion have sometimes born Testimony in the Behalf of Truth.

Joan. Henrici Hottingeri, de accuratâ eaque genuina commentandi ratione, apud Crenium, fasce 1. The first of his Dissertations, entituled, Primitiæ Heidelbergenses, is what he wrote likewise upon this Subject, printed at Heidelberg, 1659, and 1677, in 4to. We shall speak of him upon Genesis.

Joan. Marianæ, Soc. Jesu, Dissert. pro editione Vulgatâ. This Work is rare, and in good Esteem. It was printed first of all at Cologn, in 1609, together with his Treatise De Adventu Jacobi Apostoli in Hispanias. F. Tournemine had it printed in his new Edition of Menochius’s Comment.

Joseph. Acost. S. J. de verâ Scripturas Interpretandi ratione, Libri tres. They are in the new Edition of Menochius, tom. 2. with Mariana’s and Ribera’s Work. He was a Spaniard, and died in 1600.

Fran. Riberæ S. J. Proëmia quatuor, in quibus disquiritur quinam Script. sacr. Interpretes cæteris præferendi sunt. This is in the new Edition of Menochius.

Quæstiones de Scriptura Sacrâ exponenda, by Basil Pontius, printed in the same Edition. They had been so before, at Salamanca, in 1600, and 1611, in fol. This Author was a Spaniard of Granada, of the Order of St. Augustin, and died in 1629, at 59 Years of Age.

In the same Edition of Menochius, there is likewise a Treatise de Sripturæ sacræ stylo & obscuritate, and an Apology for the Vulgate, by Filesac. It had been before printed in a Collection of his Works, in three Vols. in 4to. at Paris 1621. This is the fourteenth Treatise of the first Tome in Latin. He was of Paris; was admitted Doctor of the Sorbonne in 1590, and made Parish-Priest of St. John in the Gréve. He died, very old, the 27th of May, in the Year 1638.

De Concordiâ sacr. Scripturarum cum Introductoriis Quæstionib. Auth. Petro Lopez de Montoja. Madriti, 1600. This had been before printed, in two Books in 4to. 1596. He was a Spaniard, and Professor of Salamanca, towards the End of the sixteenth Century.
