BUGEUS; this is the firname which Esth. xii.the Scripture gives Haman the great enemy of the Jews. The Greek Bugeus or Bougaios, signifies a vain Man, one puffed up with pride. We do not read Bugeus in the Hebrew, but in the Greek only. I am of opinion, that it is put for Bagoas, which signifies an Eunuch, an Officer belonging to the King of Persia’s Court.
To BUILD. Besides the proper and literal signification of this word, it is used likewise to signify producing Children and a numerous posterity. Sarah desires Abraham to take Hagar to wife, that so by her Gen. xvi.means she may be builded up, that is to say, have Children to support her family. The Midwives who refused obedience to Pharaoh’s orders, when he commanded them to put to death all the male Children of the Hebrews, were rewarde dfor it, because God built them houses, gave them a numerous posterity.
The Prophet Nathan promises David on the part of God, that he would build his house for him, that he would give him Children and Successors. The Scripture speaking of the formation of the first Woman, says, that God built her with the Rib of Adam. To edify, in the moral sense of the word, is used with relation to the good instructions and examples which we give our Neighbour, in order to inspire him with the love of virtue, to keep him in those sentiments, and improve them in him.
