Boanerges

BOANERGES, that is to say, The Son of Thunder. This is the name given by our Mark iii. 17.Saviour to the Sons of Zebedee, James and John, upon the occasion probably of their request to him, that he would call for Fire from Heaven, and reduce a certain Village belonging to the Samaritans to Ashes, Luke ix. 53. 54.which had refused to entertain them. The term Boanerges is neither Hebrew nor Syriac. There is some reason to believe, that the Greek Transcribers have not copied it exactly, and that instead of Baneregem,1 Son of Thunder, or Bane-reges,2 Son of Tempest, they wrote Boanerges. Or lastly, Boanerges may be an ill way used by the Galilæans of pronouncing Banereges.
