Bigthan

BIGTHAN. An Officer of the Guards to King Ahasuerus, or Darius the Son of Hystaspes, who having conspired against the King his Master, was discovered by Mordecai, Esth. ii. 21. The term Bigthan or Bagathan is not very different from Bagoas, which signifies an Eunuch. The Chaldee, and some Copies of the Septuagint imply, that Bigthan and Teresh his Companion conspired against the King, because they feared the future Elevation of Mordecai the Queen’s Uncle. Others are of opinion, that they being very closely attached to Haman and his Interest, had formed a Design of setting him upon the Throne, and murdering Ahasuerus. This is certain, that the cause of their Discontent was not known.
