Bedan

1 Chr. i. 46.BEDAN. It is said in the first book of Samuel, xii. 11. that the Lord sent several Deliverers for the preservation of Israel, such as Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel. Jerubbaal and Gideon we know are the same, but we no where find the name of Bedan among the Judges of Israel. The Septuagint instead of Bedan read Barak. Others1 assert, that Bedan is the same as Jair of the Tribe of Manasseh, who judg’d Israel for three and twenty Judg. x.3. 1 Chr. ii. 21, 22.years. There was one Bedan Great-grandson to Machir. Jair was descended from a Daughter of Machir. The Chaldee, the Rabbins, and after them the generality of the Commentators2, have affirmed3 affirmed, that Bedan was Samson, who was of the Tribe of Dan. But I should prefer rather their opinion, who make Bedan and Jair to be the same person. The names of Samson and Barak were added in many Latin Copies4, before the corrections of them by the Roman Censors were published.
