BASSUS, Lucilius Bassus succeeded Cerialis Vitalianus in the government of Judæa. As the revolted Jews continued in their rebellion even after the taking of Jerusalem, Bassus pursued them wherever they retreated. He took the castles of Herodium and Macharus, and extinguished the remains of the rebellion. He died in his government, and was succeeded by Flavius Silva. See Josephus’s seventh Book of the Jewish Wars, chap. 30.
