Barzillai (I)

In the year of the World 3964, before J. C. 36. before the vulg. Æra 40. 2 Sam. xvii. 27, 28. 2 Sam. xix. 33, 34, &c.I. BARZILLAI, a native of Rogelim in the land of Gilead. He was an old friend to David, and assisted him in his misfortunes, when he was forced from Jerusalem by Absalom. He came to meet this Prince at Mahanaim beyond Jordan, and offered him all manner of refreshments. After the defeat of Absalom, when David returned to Jerusalem, Barzillai attended him as far as Jordan; and David inviting him to Court, to pass the rest of his days there in repose, Barzillai answered him, How long have I to live that I should go up with the King to Jerusalem? I am this day fourscore years old; and can I discern between good and evil? my senses are no longer in a condition to distinguish sweet from bitter, nor to take pleasure in eating or drinking, in the sound of instruments, or the voices of musicians. Wherefore then should thy servant be a burden unto my Lord the King? Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the King, then I will beg permission to return, that I may die in mine own City, and be buried, by the grave of my Father and my Mother. But behold my Son, thy servant Chimham, he will have the honour to accompany my Lord the King, who may do to him what shall seem good unto him. The King answered, Let Chimham come, and I will grant whatever you shall ask of me. After therefore that the King and all the people had passed over Jordan, David embraced Barzillai, wished him all sorts of blessings; and Barzillai returned into his own country. This fell out in the year of the world 2981, before J. C. 1019, before the vulgar Æra 1022.
