Ananus (V)

V. ANANUS, a native of Emmaus, was one of Simon’s guards who commanded the Rebels. He surrender’d himself to Titus with one Archelaus, the Son of Magadatus1. Titus received them with his usual clemency; but as he saw that pure necessity had obliged them to surrender, he did not treat them as he had done other Jews who had had recourse to him, but granted them their Lives only, with permission to go where they would. At first he had resolved to put them to death, as Villains who abandoned the defence of their Country, after they had put it in a flame.
