Josh. xix. 24. Ch. xxi. 24.AJALON, a City of the Tribe of Dan. It was assigned over to the Levites of Kohath’s Family. We find it sometimes under the name of Elom or Ailom. Eusebius says, that in his time there was shewn a place called Ajalon, three miles Eastward from Bethel: but this cannot be the Ch. x. 12.famous Ajalon mentioned in Joshua, where he speaks to the moon to stand still in the Valley of Ajalon; for this did not belong to the Tribe of Dan; and Bethel was too remote from this Tribe. There must be still another Ajalon, which St. Jerom takes notice of1; this was two miles from Shechem, in the way to Jerusalem. He says elsewhere2, that S. Paula going from Shechem to Bethoron, saw on her left hand 2 Chr. xxviii. 18.Ajalon and Gibeon. In the Chronicles Ajalon is placed between Bethshemesh and Timnah. Lastly, there was a City called Ajalon in the Tribe of Zebulun, Judges xii. 12.
Thus there were four Cities of this name. The first in the Tribe of Dan, between See 2 Chr. xxviii. 18, &c.Timnah and Bethshemesh, which is that probably spoken of by Joshua, when he said to the Moon, Thou Moon stand still in the valley of Ajalon.
The second Ajalon, was in the Tribe of Benjamin, three miles Eastward from Bethel. See 2 Chron. xi. 10.
The third Ajalon, was in the Tribe of Ephraim, two miles from Shechem, as you go to Jerusalem, and to the East of Αἰχμαλωτάρχης.Bethoron.
The fourth was in the Tribe of Zebulun, the situation whereof is not exactly known.
