A second new author in a single day: The Areopagitic Vindications — the Vindiciae Areopagiticae of Martin Delrio, S.J. (Antwerp, Plantin Press, 1607), in English for the first time.
Delrio — councillor of Philip II before he was a Jesuit, and author of the great Disquisitiones Magicae — wrote this defense of the writings of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite against Joseph Scaliger in the last two years of his life, and sent it to his superior with the words: “By your judgment let this Anti-Scaliger stand or fall.” In thirty-four chapters he answers Scaliger’s arguments one by one — the founding of the monks, the Trullan canon, the silence of the early centuries — and then summons his witnesses: Greek and Latin Fathers, popes and councils, Maximus and Photius, Hilduin and Hincmar, and the schismatic Greeks themselves, agreeing with Rome about Dionysius if about nothing else.
The translation keeps the Greek of the print where the argument turns on the word — why God is called Θεός and Lord Κύριος — each reading verified against the 1607 edition. The work may be read online chapter by chapter, with the printed pages of each chapter recovered from the original’s own index, or downloaded as a PDF with a clickable table of contents and as an EPUB for e-readers. Every chapter is joined to the library-wide indexes, where Delrio — until today a name cited in Serarius’s pages — now stands as an author.
