Distinction VI. Treatise I
DISTINCTIO VI. QUOMODO HOC DONUM SIT IN GENERE SACRAMENTI?
TRACTATUS I. DE INSTITUTIONE HUJUS SACRAMENTI.
DISTINCTION VI. IN WHAT WAY THIS GIFT IS IN THE GENUS OF SACRAMENT?
TREATISE I. ON THE INSTITUTION OF THIS SACRAMENT.
When all these things have been determined, it now remains to speak about the last genus of that grace, in which it is posited by all that it is a sacrament of the Church.
Concerning this four things to be noted occur, namely institution, matter and form; and what this sacrament is, and what is thing and sacrament, and what is thing only; and fourth, what is the rite of celebrating this sacrament.
Concerning institution indeed it occurs that one must speak of the cause of institution, of necessity, of time, and of mode; for these things are inquired in every sacramental institution.
Therefore, speaking of institution, let us say that the cause of instituting this sacrament, although it is very manifold, nevertheless is found assigned by the Fathers as fourfold: the first of which it has insofar as it is a sacrament of the Church. But the second, insofar as it is a memorial of Christ's love. The third, insofar as it is a commemoration of Christ's Passion. But the fourth, insofar as it is a sign of future beatitude.
