Question 167. How this blessing comprehends all other blessings?
QUAESTIO CLXVII. Qualiter ista benedictio: Benedicta tu in mulieribus, comprehendat in se omnes alias benedictiones?
Ibi requies sua in saeculum saeculi: ibi habitabit quoniam elegit eam.
Sic igitur beata Virgo habuit septimi diei benedictionem.
QUESTION 167. How this blessing, Blessed are you among women, comprehends in itself all other blessings?
But in what way this blessing, Blessed are you among women, comprehends in itself all other blessings is easy to see for one running through them individually.
The first blessing is that in which God blessed the seventh day, on which he rested from every work which he had made 1. But this blessing is the consummation of work, freedom from sins, and prefiguration of eternal rest. In the blessed Virgin there was perfect consummation of works, when all created things are united in one man to the one creator, and the first was last and the last first; for there is no perfection of motion or work except in a circle. Likewise, there similarly is true cessation from sins, for in her will there was no sin, and besides, sin could not be present. This rest also was not only a sign of future rest, but also its cause. Therefore if the seventh day is blessed because of the sabbath of the day of creation, since the sabbath of the day of recreation is more excellent than that of creation, therefore there was also a greater blessing. For in all things he sought rest, and in her alone he found it; in her he found all things whatever he sought. Whence he also rested in her tabernacle 2. For she is the true Zion, which the Lord chose as a dwelling for himself. There is his rest forever and ever; there he will dwell because he chose her.
Thus therefore the blessed Virgin had the blessing of the seventh day.
