Question 154. Whether she had the properties of Archangels?

QUAESTIO CLIV. Utrum habuerit cum excellentia proprietates Archangelorum?
Secundus ordo est Archangelorum, qui similiter secundum beatum Dionysium tres videntur habere proprietates.
Prima est a superioribus communicare. Secunda, super inferiores esse. Tertia, inferiores ad superiores reducere.
Primam harum habuit cum excellentia: ipsa enim a superioribus maxime communicavit, juxta illud Lucae, I, 35: Spiritus sanctus superveniet, etc., id est, plusquam in aliquem sanctorum veniet in te. Alii sancti acceperunt a superioribus gratiam creatam particulariter: ipsa autem creatam universaliter, et increatam singulariter.
Secundam etiam habuit cum excellentia: alii enim sancti super aliquos, et nullus super omnes: ipsa autem super omnes. Item, Angeli et alii sancti sunt super alios tantum ex gratia: ipsa autem ex gratia, justitia, et natura: naturaliter enim mater regis est regina, et regina justitia et gratia est super omnes qui in suo regno sunt.
QUESTION 154. Whether she had with excellence the properties of Archangels?
The second order is that of Archangels, which similarly, according to blessed Dionysius, seems to have three properties.
The first is to communicate from superiors. The second, to be above inferiors. The third, to lead inferiors back to superiors.
She had the first of these with excellence, for she communicated most greatly from superiors, according to Luke 1:35: The Holy Spirit will come upon you, etc., that is, he will come into you more than into any of the saints. Other saints received created grace particularly from superiors; but she received created grace universally, and uncreated grace singularly.
She also had the second with excellence, for other saints are above some, and no one above all; but she is above all. Likewise, Angels and other saints are above others only by grace; but she is above others by grace, justice, and nature. For naturally the mother of the king is queen, and the queen by justice and grace is above all who are in her kingdom.
Tertiam quoque habuit cum excellentia: ipsa enim sola omnes inferiores reduxit tamquam mediatrix reconciliationis, adjutrix redemptionis, et Angelorum numerum restauravit, subvenit ruinae ante conspectum Domini, sicut dicitur, Judith, XIII, 25, et hominem lapsum reparavit et revocavit.
Sic igitur habuit beatissima Virgo omnes proprietates secundi ordinis cum excellentia in summo.
She also had the third with excellence, for she alone led all inferiors back as mediatrix of reconciliation, helper of redemption, and she restored the number of Angels, helped the ruin before the sight of the Lord, as is said in Judith 13:25, and repaired and recalled fallen man.
Thus therefore the most blessed Virgin had all the properties of the second order with excellence in the highest degree.
