Question 117. Whether she had kinds of tongues?
QUAESTIO CXVII. Utrum habuerit genera linguarum?
Sequitur: Alii genera linguarum 1.
Quod autem hanc gratiam non habuerit in summo, videri potest:
1. Linguae enim in signum sunt non fidelibus, sed infidelibus 2. Sed ipsa fidelissima fuit: ergo donum linguae non debuit habere.
2. Item, Ipsa non debuit praedicare: ergo non debuit donum linguae habere. Item, Glossa, ibidem: « Ut euntes per mundum intelligant linguas hominum. » Sed ipsa non debuit sic ire per mundum: ergo non debuit habere donum linguarum.
Sed contra:
1. Ipsa est advocata omnium: ergo debet scire linguas singulorum.
2. Item, Act. II, 3: Seditque supra singulos eorum Spiritus sanctus: sed ipsa fuit cum eis quando apparuerunt dispertitae linguae tamquam ignis: ergo accepit donum linguae cum ipsis.
3. Item, Cum diversis hominibus conversabatur: ergo indiguit dono linguae.
4. Item, A nullo illustrium vincitur in aliquo: ergo habuit donum istud omnibus aliis excellentius 3.
QUESTION 117. Whether she had kinds of tongues?
There follows: To another, kinds of tongues 1.
But that she did not have this grace in the highest degree can seem so:
1. For tongues are for a sign not to believers, but to unbelievers 2. But she herself was most faithful. Therefore she ought not to have had the gift of a tongue.
2. Likewise, she herself ought not to preach. Therefore she ought not to have the gift of a tongue. Likewise, the Gloss in the same place says: “That those going through the world may understand the tongues of men.” But she herself ought not so to go through the world. Therefore she ought not to have the gift of tongues.
But to the contrary:
1. She herself is the advocate of all. Therefore she ought to know the tongues of each.
2. Likewise, Acts 2:3: And the Holy Spirit sat above each of them. But she herself was with them when divided tongues as of fire appeared. Therefore she received the gift of a tongue with them.
3. Likewise, she lived together with diverse people. Therefore she needed the gift of a tongue.
4. Likewise, she is surpassed by none of the illustrious in anything. Therefore she had this gift more excellently than all others 3.
