Question 114. Whether she had the working of powers?
QUAESTIO CXIV. Utrum habuerit operationem virtutum?
Sequitur: Alii operatio virtutum 1. Glossa: « Operatio miraculorum contra naturam. »
Quod autem habuerit in summo hanc beata Virgo, patet:
1. Ex eo quod omnium miraculorum miraculosissimum et novissimum est illud quod ejus fide media constat esse factum, scilicet quod Deus homo, mater virgo. Unde, Isa. LXVI, 8: Quis audivit umquam tale? Jerem. XXXI, 22: Creavit Dominus novum super terram: Foemina circumdabit virum. Ergo ipsa habuit gratiam miracula faciendi in summo.
2. Item, Miraculum est arduum et insolitum super facultatem consistens admirantis: hoc autem totum fuit hic in summo.
3. Item, Alii fecerunt miracula praeter naturam, vel contra naturam, sed ipsius fide factum est miraculum super naturam: ergo patet qualiter excellit omnes in opere virtutum 2.
QUESTION 114. Whether she had the working of powers?
There follows: To another, the working of powers 1. The Gloss says: “The working of miracles contrary to nature.”
But that the blessed Virgin had this in the highest degree is clear:
1. From the fact that the most miraculous and newest of all miracles is that which is known to have been done with her faith as mediator, namely that God is man, and the mother is virgin. Hence Isaiah 66:8: Who ever heard such a thing? Jeremiah 31:22: The Lord has created a new thing upon the earth: A woman shall encompass a man. Therefore she herself had the grace of doing miracles in the highest degree.
2. Likewise, a miracle is arduous and unusual, standing above the capacity of the one wondering. But this whole thing was here in the highest degree.
3. Likewise, others performed miracles beyond nature or contrary to nature, but by her faith a miracle was done above nature. Therefore it is clear in what way she surpasses all in the working of powers 2.
