QUAESTIO LXXXVI.

Utrum patientia fuerit in ipsa?

Post haec quaeritur de patientia.

1. Psal. XCIII, 19: Secundum multitudinem dolorum meorum in corde meo, consolationes tuae laetificaverunt animam meam: sed beatissima Virgo habuit dolorem passionis post Filium in summo: ergo fructum patientiae in summo.

2. Item, Sicut se habet passio ad passionem, ita consolatio ad consolationem: Christus autem in passione summum dolorem habuit et summam consolationem: sed passio beatae Virginis simillima fuit illi passioni: ergo consolatio consolationi.

3. Item, Proverb. XXXI, 6: Date siceram maerentibus, et vinum his qui amaro sunt animo: sed beatissima Virgo habuit amaritudinem passionis in summo: ergo et siceram et vinum consolationis in summo.

4. Item, Isa. LXI, 3: Dabit eis Dominus coronam pro cinere, oleum gaudii pro luctu, pallium laudis pro spiritu maeroris: sed beata Virgo habuit luctum et maerorem in summo: ergo et gaudium et consolationem in summo 1.

QUESTION 86.

Whether patience was in her.

After these things inquiry is made concerning patience.

1. Psalm 93:19: According to the multitude of my sorrows in my heart, your consolations made my soul glad. But the most blessed Virgin had the sorrow of the passion after her Son in the highest degree; therefore the fruit of patience in the highest degree.

2. Likewise, as suffering is related to suffering, so consolation is related to consolation. But Christ in the passion had the highest sorrow and the highest consolation; but the suffering of the blessed Virgin was most similar to that suffering; therefore consolation was similar to consolation.

3. Likewise, Proverbs 31:6: Give strong drink to those who mourn, and wine to those who are bitter in soul. But the most blessed Virgin had the bitterness of the passion in the highest degree; therefore also strong drink and wine of consolation in the highest degree.

4. Likewise, Isaiah 61:3: The Lord will give them a crown for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of sorrow. But the blessed Virgin had mourning and sorrow in the highest degree; therefore also joy and consolation in the highest degree 1.
