QUAESTIO LXXVII.

Utrum pax fuerit in ipsa?

QUESTION 77.

Whether peace was in her.

After these things inquiry is made concerning peace, and that it likewise was in the most blessed Virgin is proved in this way:

1. Blessed are the peacemakers 1. The Gloss says: "Peacemakers are those who subject all the movements of the soul to reason," because nothing resists them; they are like their Father, who is supreme rest. But all this was in the highest degree in the most blessed Virgin; therefore she is peace-making in the highest degree.

2. Likewise, another Gloss in the same place says: "While the law of the flesh resists the law of the mind, we cannot be peaceful not only toward another, but not even toward ourselves." Therefore she exists disproportionately peaceful above all, she in whom the flesh did not rebel against the spirit.

3. Likewise, as reward is to reward, so merit is to merit, and so forth. And if to other peacemakers the reward was given that they should be sons of God by adoption, to the blessed Virgin it was given that she should be the Mother of God by nature; but this is disproportionately more than to be a son of God by adoption. Therefore the reward of the most blessed Virgin is disproportionately above the reward of others; therefore merit above merit; but this is peacemaking; therefore the blessed Virgin in this beatitude surpasses all.

4. Likewise, the blessed Virgin was the universal medium and cause of peace; for she was universal mediatrix and reconciler, for all were to be reconciled through her. Therefore in peacemaking she surpasses all wayfarers 2.
