QUAESTIO LVII. Utrum habuerit temperantiam?

Postea quaeritur de temperantia, quae:

1. Sic describitur secundum Philosophos: Temperantia est contra illicitos animi impetus firma et discreta dominatio. Item, Matth. XV, 38: Erant qui manducaverant quasi quatuor millia hominum. Glossa: "Temperantia est refraenatio cupiditatis ab his quae temporaliter delectant." Patet quod in his diffinitionibus diffinitur temperantia secundum actum viae et non patriae, et quod secundum actus istos non fuit temperantia in beatissima Virgine: ergo non habuit temperantiam per modum viae, sed patriae.

2. Item, Augustinus: "Temperantia est amor incorruptibilis in Deo et integer": sed tam amor quam incorruptio et integritas fuit improportionabiliter excellentius in beatissima Virgine, quam in aliquo viatore: ergo habuit temperantiam improportionabiliter super omnes viatores ¹.

QUESTION LVII. Whether she had temperance?

Afterward it is asked concerning temperance, which:

1. Is described thus according to the Philosophers: Temperance is a firm and discerning mastery against unlawful impulses of the soul. Likewise, Matthew 15:38 says: Those who had eaten were about four thousand men. The Gloss says: "Temperance is the restraint of desire from those things that delight temporally." It is clear that in these definitions temperance is defined according to an act of the way and not of the homeland, and that according to those acts there was not temperance in the most blessed Virgin. Therefore she did not have temperance through the mode of the way, but through the mode of the homeland.

2. Likewise, Augustine says: "Temperance is love incorruptible and whole in God." But love, incorruption, and integrity alike were disproportionately more excellently in the most blessed Virgin than in any wayfarer. Therefore she had temperance disproportionately above all wayfarers ¹.
