OSEE PROPHETA.
Verbum Domini, quod factum est ad Osee 1.
1. Beata Virgo Maria est vitis fructificationis. Osee, X, 1: Vitis frondosa Israel, id est, Maria omni gratia plena, habens bonas propagines, fructus adaequatus est ei. Hic fructus excellit omnes alios, in quantitate, et qualitate, sanctitate, suavitate. Osee, XIV, 6: Ero quasi ros. Glossa: Aestum aestuantis incendii et libidinis auferam, hoc rore infusa.
2. Item, Semper ad pietatis opera erumpit. Osee, XIV, 6: Erumpet radix ejus. Glossa: id est, bona voluntas ad effectum boni operis perducetur, ut Libani. Et infra, v. 7: Ibunt rami ejus de virtute in virtutem 2.
3. Item, Ipsa est mater misericordiae. Ibidem, XIV, 7: Erit quasi oliva gloria ejus. Glossa: per opera misericordiae: et odor ejus ut Libani. Et infra, v. 8: Memoriale ejus sicut vinum Libani, quod diversis pigmentis conditum, suavem odorem emittit. Bernardus: "Laudamus virginitatem, humilitatem miramur, sed misericordia miseris sapit dulcius, misericordiam amplectimur charius, recordamur saepius, crebrius invocamus, etc. 3."
was even to the ends of the whole earth. Gloss: Not only to the Angels and the just, but also to sinners; indeed to those who are in purgatory. Fifth, from fruitfulness, there: Its leaves were very beautiful, that is, the words which she spoke to the Angel, to her kinswoman, to the Son, to the ministers. And its fruit was exceedingly great, that is, Christ Jesus, who suffices both for Angels and for human beings. Sixth, from feeding, because she fed all, there: And the food of all was in it, that is, of Angels and of human beings. Seventh, from most faithful protection, there: Beneath it, that is, beneath her protection, dwelt, confidently and joyfully, animals and beasts, that is, wretched sinners, because of refreshment, protection, rest, and beauty. Eighth, from the delight which all the Saints have in her, there: And in its branches, namely of virtues, that is, of humility, mercy, charity, and so forth, the birds of heaven dwelt, that is, all the Saints, and from it all flesh was fed, because she nourishes all.
HOSEA THE PROPHET.
The word of the Lord, which came to Hosea 1.
1. The blessed Virgin Mary is the vine of fruit-bearing. Hosea 10:1: Israel is a leafy vine, that is, Mary full of every grace, having good shoots; the fruit has been made equal to it. This fruit surpasses all others in quantity and quality, holiness and sweetness. Hosea 14:6: I shall be like dew. Gloss: I will take away the heat of blazing fire and of lust, when she has been infused with this dew.
2. Likewise, she always bursts forth into works of loving-kindness. Hosea 14:6: Its root will burst forth. Gloss: that is, the good will shall be led through to the effect of a good work, as of Lebanon. And below, verse 7: Its branches will go from virtue into virtue 2.
3. Likewise, she herself is the mother of mercy. In the same place, 14:7: Her glory will be like the olive tree. Gloss: through works of mercy: and her fragrance like Lebanon. And below, verse 8: Her memorial is like the wine of Lebanon, which, seasoned with diverse spices, sends forth a sweet fragrance. Bernard: "We praise virginity, we wonder at humility, but mercy tastes sweeter to the wretched; we embrace mercy more dearly, we remember it more often, we invoke it more frequently, and so forth 3."
