11. Item, Ipsa est opus totius novitatis. Jerem. XXXI, 22: Creavit Dominus novum super terram, imo in caelo, et sub terra. Femina, id est, Maria immaculata, circumdabit mirabiliter virum, sine virili semine in gremio uteri sui.
12. Item, Ipsa est illud vas, de quo dicit Spiritus sanctus, Eccli. XLII, 2: Vas admirabile opus Excelsi, mirabile, quia majus se ipso continet, scilicet Deum, quem totus orbis non bajulat, gestant puellae viscera, ut sancta canit Ecclesia: mirabile, quod vinum et aquam sine interstitio, et tamen sine mixtione continet, scilicet vinum deitatis, et aquam humanitatis, quia Deus in ipsa nec commixtionem passus est, nec divisionem, ut eadem Ecclesia cantat in festo Circumcisionis Domini. Mirabile, quia clausum in se recepit Deum, quem clausum effudit: unde virgo ante partum, virgo in partu, et post partum.
Item, Ipsa est mons et domus totius securitatis. Jerem. XXXI, 23: Benedicat tibi Dominus, id est, Maria, pulchritudo justitiae, mons sanctus. Glossa: in quo qui habitaverit, nullas insidias sustinebit, vel expavescet.
LAMENTATIONES JEREMIAE PROPHETAE.
Quomodo sedet sola civitas plena populo 1?
1. Sponsa Dei electa, in morte Filii sui viduata, dolores et afflictiones sustinens supra modum. Thren. I, 1: Facta est quasi vidua. Glossa: absente sponso, domina gentium: princeps provinciarum caeli et terrae, facta est sub tributo angustiae et doloris. Unde Damascenus 2: "Sed et ipsa beata, et supra naturam donorum digna effecta, dolores partus, quos effugit pariens, illo tempore passionis sustinuit, ex materna compassione viscerum, lacerum reparturiens, et quem Deum per nativitatem agnovit, illum ut maleficum, interfectum videns, tamquam gladio cogitationibus decerpitur: et hoc est: Tuam ipsius animam pertransibit gladius 3."
2. Item, Ipsa est mater amaritudinis in passione Filii, quae fuit mater dulcedinis in conceptione. Unde orans ad Patrem dicit, Thren. I, 20: Vide, Domine. O Pater, te Patrem, te pium judicem cruciatus flectant. Vide Filium tuum pulcherrimum, deformissimum, excelsum, dejectissimum, clamantem ad te: Eli, Eli, ut quid dereliquisti me 4? Vide Filium tuum, super omnia mihi conjunctum
set. And the temple will be founded. The temple of grace, mercy, and glory, and the temple of the whole Trinity, wholly is Mary: she has been founded through humility, raised up through hope, adorned through charity.
11. Likewise, she herself is the work of all newness. Jeremiah 31:22: The Lord has created a new thing upon the earth, indeed in heaven and under the earth. A woman, that is, immaculate Mary, will wonderfully encompass a man, without male seed in the bosom of her womb.
12. Likewise, she herself is that vessel concerning which the Holy Spirit says, Ecclesiasticus 42:2: A wonderful vessel, the work of the Most High; wonderful, because it contains one greater than itself, namely God, whom the whole world does not carry, yet the entrails of a maiden bear him, as holy Church sings; wonderful, because it contains wine and water without interval and yet without mixture, namely the wine of deity and the water of humanity, because God in her suffered neither commixture nor division, as the same Church sings on the feast of the Circumcision of the Lord. Wonderful, because she received God closed within herself, whom, closed, she poured forth: hence a virgin before birth, a virgin in birth, and after birth.
Likewise, she herself is the mountain and house of all security. Jeremiah 31:23: May the Lord bless you, that is, Mary, beauty of justice, holy mountain. Gloss: whoever has dwelt in it will sustain or fear no ambushes.
THE LAMENTATIONS OF JEREMIAH THE PROPHET.
How does the city full of people sit alone 1?
1. The chosen bride of God, widowed at the death of her Son, sustaining pains and afflictions beyond measure. Lamentations 1:1: She has become as a widow. Gloss: with the bridegroom absent, the mistress of the nations; the princess of the provinces of heaven and earth has been made subject to the tribute of distress and sorrow. Whence Damascene 2: "But even she, blessed and made worthy of gifts above nature, sustained at that time of the passion the pains of birth which she escaped when giving birth; from the maternal compassion of her entrails, bringing forth again the torn one, and seeing him whom by his nativity she had known as God slain as a malefactor, she is cut apart in her thoughts as by a sword; and this is: A sword will pass through your own soul 3."
2. Likewise, she herself is the mother of bitterness in the passion of the Son, who was the mother of sweetness in conception. Hence, praying to the Father, she says, Lamentations 1:20: See, O Lord. O Father, let your tortures bend you as Father and you as kindly judge. See your Son, most beautiful, made most misshapen; lofty, cast down most low; crying to you: Eli, Eli, why have you forsaken me 4? See your Son, joined to me above all things
