Jeremiah the Prophet, page 413
uberem, pulchram, fructiferam, speciosam, vocavit Dominus nomen tuum. Ista nomina diversis gratiis beatissimae Virgine adapta.
5. Item, Ipsa est solium propitiationis. Jerem. XIV, 21: Ne des nos in opprobrium,... neque facias nobis contumeliam, scilicet quam meruimus: solii gloriae tuae recordare, id est, Mariae, ne irritum facias foedus tuum. Glossa: promissae salutis, nobiscum.
Jerem.
Matth. V, 14: Non potest civitas abscondi supra montem
rich, beautiful, fruitful, splendid, the Lord called your name. Adapt these names to the diverse graces of the most blessed Virgin.
5. Likewise, she herself is the throne of propitiation. Jeremiah 14:21: Do not give us into reproach, ... and do not bring disgrace upon us, namely the disgrace which we have deserved: remember the throne of your glory, that is, Mary, do not make your covenant void. Gloss: of promised salvation, with us.
6. Likewise, she herself is our advocate, against the wise judge, against the most cunning enemy, and this in a desperate case. Jeremiah 15:1 and 2: And the Lord said to me: If Moses and Samuel stood before me. Gloss: praying for the people: my soul is not toward this people. But what, O good Jesus, if the mother of mercy shall have stood before you, will you, being angry, say to her concerning sinners, as to Jeremiah: Cast them out from your face, and let them go forth to sword, famine, captivity, and death? You will not so speak to your mother. Therefore, appeased by the voice of Mary, cry out: lead back the wretched to peace against the sword, to fullness against famine, to liberty against captivity, to life against death. She alone will take up the cause of the desperate, which none of the other Saints is fittingly permitted to take up, while the Lord says to the desperate sinner, Jeremiah 15:5: Who will have mercy on you, Jerusalem? that is, O desperate soul, which before were a vision of peace, but now are a vision of hell. Who will be saddened for you? when the sentence of death is borne against you, when it shall be said to you: Depart from me, accursed ones 1, and so forth. There, when all abandon us, she will not abandon us. For she will have mercy, and she will suffer with us; she will go to plead for our peace, which she will obtain more benevolently.
7. Likewise, she herself is the potter's house, or the house of the renewal of the human race. Jeremiah 18:1 and following: the Lord said to Jeremiah: Arise, and go down into the house of the potter. The house of God the potter is the Virgin Mary, in whom God made his work upon the wheel, the work of the incarnation, placing himself on the wheel of human changeableness, so that the fountain thirsted, the bread hungered, rest grew weary, light was darkened, life died on the wood. And this is what follows, verse 4: The vessel was broken, namely in the passion, but reshaped in the resurrection. This is the house in which the wretched Theophilus was reshaped, as is sung in praise of her on the day of her annunciation in the prose which begins: "Hail, Mary, reshaping Theophilus for grace."
8. Likewise, she herself is the most wise advocate, obtaining pardon and grace, and pleading that saying of Jeremiah 18:20: Remember, O Son, that I stood, at the time of your death, in your sight, at the cross, pitifully, and now with you in heaven, powerfully, in gilded clothing 2. That I might speak good for those who are worthy of eternal death, and might turn your indignation away from them.
9. Likewise, she herself, after the example of the Son, offers herself for us. Jeremiah 26:14: Behold I, namely the mother of God, am in your hands, placing my whole self in your service: do to me what is good, not only to me, but also to you, now and in the future. And not only concerning me, indeed concerning my Son, whose body and blood you receive daily on the altar, do to me what you will; nevertheless do what is right in your eyes, and not only before yourselves, but also before your heavenly Father.
10. Likewise, she herself is the city of height. Jeremiah 30:18: A city, that is, Mary, shall be built by the Lord on high, so that it may be a support for all. Matthew 5:14: A city set upon a mountain cannot be hidden
